It's beginning to feel...?

….a lot like Winter! For some, at least. Here in San Francisco, Cloudsea is feeling a little cloudy (😉) as we settle in for some dreary yet much-needed winter rain. But elsewhere in North America the air is crisp, cold, and starting to swirl with snow.

I know I could use a little more of that holiday vibe to get me in the spirit, so I thought it would be fun to highlight some domestic destinations with picture-perfect winter scenes. All of these places are great for both a quick weekend getaway or a longer vacation, with plenty to offer based on your interests.

New York City, NY

I grew up not far from NYC and spent a lot of time here as a kid. For me, nothing is better than the city in December. It’s crazy, overwhelming, and purely magical. Let’s start with the shopping: you can find anything, at any price point, and the famous stores all do something cool for the season like life-size animations, interactive events, or hands-on demonstrations. In fact, the decorations city-wide are top-notch. You could spend a day just touring Manhattan to see the holiday scenes from Rockefeller Center and the Tree to the world’s largest Hanukkah Menorahs while spending nothing more than subway fare (well, and perhaps a little more for some warm treats from a street vendor). The city has non-stop events all winter, so there’s never a bad time to visit.

For a quintessentially New England holiday you have to visit Boston. Although it has every benefit and convenience of a modern city, you’ll feel like you stepped 200 years back in time as you roam past the gorgeous red-bricked buildings along winding streets filled with surprises. Although its waterfront location makes it popular in summertime, winter in Boston is similarly perfect - plenty of cultural opportunities are on offer during the colder months, including fantastic performing arts and museums, but Boston also situates you close to great locations for skiing and other wintertime activities.

Quebec, QC [CA]

I can’t forget my neighbor to the North when I’m thinking of wonderful holiday destinations. Although Canada has a ton to offer, Quebec is a singularly enchanting place. When you first arrive you’ll feel as though you touched down in Europe; it’s the only walled city in North America, and its original artisans brought with them their old-world flair and techniques. After you’re done admiring the sights, I would suggest checking out the world-class dining, fantastic comedy shows, and specialized ateliers. Venture just outside the city to find amazing skiing, traditional Maple syrup, dog-sledding, mind-boggling winter fun complexes, and even an ice hotel!
